Afternoon fatigue is something everyone knows. It typically arrives around two or three in the afternoon, eyes start closing on their own, and concentration dissolves like sugar in water. In such moments, many people are tempted by an appealing thought – what about lying down for a while? But doubt quickly follows: will it ruin my night's sleep? Will I end up even more tired? Daytime napping is a topic surrounded by numerous myths, yet science knows a surprisingly large amount of interesting things about it.
A short sleep in the middle of the day is nothing new, nor is it laziness. In the Mediterranean, the siesta has been part of the culture for centuries; in Spain, Italy, or Greece, it is still considered a natural part of the day. But not only there – in Japan, for example, there is a concept called inemuri, the art of dozing off anywhere and at any time without it being socially unacceptable. On the contrary, in the Japanese work environment, a brief nap at the workplace is seen as proof that a person works so diligently that they exhaust their strength. What happens in the body during an afternoon nap
The human body goes through natural cycles of wakefulness and sleepiness throughout the day, governed by what is known as the circadian rhythm. The drop in energy during the afternoon hours is not just caused by a hearty lunch, as is often said, but is a natural biological phenomenon that would occur regardless of what a person ate for lunch or whether they ate at all. A study by Greek scientists following over 23,000 adults found that people who nap regularly have more than thirty percent lower risk of dying from heart disease. Of course, such figures should be taken with a degree of caution, as many other factors come into play – lifestyle, diet, genetics. Nevertheless, the connection between regular daytime rest and heart health is scientifically documented and is certainly worth noting.
As Winston Churchill, who guarded his afternoon sleep like a treasure, once aptly remarked: "You must sleep sometime between lunch and dinner, and no halfway measures. Take off your clothes and get into bed. That's what I always do. Don't think you will be doing less work because you sleep during the day. That's a foolish notion held by people who have no imagination." Churchill worked intensively until the late evening hours and attributed his performance precisely to regular rest.
When napping is actually harmful
Despite all its benefits, daytime sleep also has its downsides – and it depends primarily on how long it lasts and at what time it occurs. The key to a successful nap is its duration. Experts from NASA, who studied the effects of sleep on pilots' performance, found that the ideal nap length is approximately 10 to 20 minutes. Such a "power nap" delivers maximum benefits – refreshment, better concentration, improved mood – without the person falling into the deep stages of sleep from which they wake up disoriented and even more tired than before.
This unpleasant state even has its own technical name: sleep inertia. It occurs when a person interrupts deep, slow-wave sleep, and the brain then needs time to fully wake up and restore normal functions. After thirty to sixty minutes of daytime sleep, sleep inertia is most pronounced – a person feels foggy, sluggish, and their performance is paradoxically worse than before the nap. So if someone wakes up from an afternoon nap feeling like they would rather go straight back to bed, they probably slept too long.
The second critical factor is timing. Napping after four in the afternoon can disrupt nighttime sleep, because it sends the body a signal that it is not tired, reducing the natural sleep pressure that builds up throughout the day. The result is often that a person cannot fall asleep in the evening, nighttime sleep is shorter or interrupted, and they wake up tired the next morning – closing the whole cycle into a vicious circle.
Daytime napping may also not be suitable for everyone. People suffering from insomnia or other sleep disorders should avoid it or consult a specialist. In chronic insomnia, daytime sleep is one of the things that doctors recommend limiting during cognitive-behavioral therapy for sleep (CBT-I) – precisely in order to restore healthy sleep pressure and make falling asleep in the evening natural.
Similarly, people who tend to sleep too long during the day and then feel even worse should be cautious. If someone regularly wakes up from an afternoon nap after two hours feeling dull and disoriented, it may not simply be a matter of poor napping technique – it could be a signal that the body is suffering from a lack of nighttime sleep or another health issue worth investigating.

Some experts recommend a so-called "caffeine nap" – a cup of coffee right before dozing off. Caffeine begins to take effect approximately twenty minutes after consumption, so the person wakes up precisely when the caffeine kicks in and feels particularly refreshed. It sounds paradoxical, but studies confirm this method as highly effective.
The environment also plays its part. It does not need to be complete darkness and silence as with nighttime sleep – a comfortable position, closed eyes, and a moment of quiet are sufficient. Some people learn to nap in an armchair or on a sofa without undressing or lying in bed. This can help the brain distinguish between "proper" nighttime sleep and a brief daytime rest.
It is also important to listen to your own body. Not every day does a nap need to be a necessity – sometimes five minutes of quiet sitting with closed eyes is enough for the brain to reset somewhat. Meditation or deep breathing can bring a similar refreshing effect without the risk of sleep inertia.
