This simple test can detect both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism and is available as part of standard medical care. If the results suggest a problem, the doctor will usually recommend an ultrasound examination of the thyroid gland and possibly additional tests for the presence of antibodies.

Treatment depends on the type and severity of the disorder. Hypothyroidism is most commonly treated with a synthetic thyroid hormone – levothyroxine – whose dosage is adjusted based on ongoing blood tests. With correctly calibrated treatment, the menstrual cycle normalises in most women and fertility improves significantly. Hyperthyroidism is treated with medications that reduce hormone production, radioactive iodine, or surgery, with the choice depending on the patient's specific situation.
