And suddenly – it's as if a swarm of butterflies has taken flight in your stomach. That strange, slightly unpleasant yet exciting feeling that's hard to put into words actually has a completely concrete physiological explanation. It's not just a poetic metaphor. It's a real bodily response that originates deep within your nervous system and reaches all the way into your gut.

The feeling of butterflies in the stomach is one of the most universal human experiences. Across cultures, generations, and languages, people describe this characteristic flutter in the stomach area during intense emotional arousal – whether positive or negative. But why do we actually feel butterflies in our stomach physically, when it's a mental state? The answer lies at the fascinating boundary between neurology, psychology, and evolution.

The Gut as a Second Brain

To understand what happens in the body during intense arousal, we first need to understand how closely the brain and digestive system are connected. Scientists speak of the so-called gut-brain axis – a bidirectional communication channel that connects the central nervous system with the enteric nervous system, the network of nerves surrounding the entire digestive tract. The enteric nervous system contains approximately 500 million nerve cells – more than can be found in the spinal cord. This is precisely why scientists call it the "second brain."

This second brain operates largely independently – it controls digestion, bowel movement, and the production of various substances without needing instructions from the head. Yet it remains in constant contact with the brain via the vagus nerve, which forms the main highway between the two systems. So when the brain registers a strong emotion – whether fear, excitement, or being in love – it immediately sends signals down to the digestive system. And the digestive system responds.

Research in the field of neurogastroenterology, including studies published in the journal Gut, has repeatedly confirmed that emotional states have a direct, measurable impact on digestive tract function. This is no mysticism – it is pure biology.

When the brain evaluates a situation as exciting or potentially threatening, it activates the so-called sympathetic nervous system – the part of the autonomic nervous system responsible for the "fight or flight" response. This response has evolutionary roots deep in our past. Long ago, when one of our ancestors spotted a predator, the body needed to immediately redirect energy to where it was most needed – to the muscles, heart, and lungs. Digestion is not a priority at that moment. And so the brain literally diverts blood away from the digestive tract to other organs.

This sudden reduction in blood flow to the intestines is precisely what we feel as that characteristic sensation in the stomach. The smooth muscle surrounding the stomach and intestines responds to changes in blood flow and nerve signals through contractions and relaxations, which we perceive as that strange "fluttering" or "trembling." Some scientists compare this feeling to the intestines momentarily "waking up" from a resting state and beginning to respond to the outside world.

Interestingly, the same response occurs both in fear and in joyful excitement – such as being in love or waiting for the results of an important competition. In both cases, the brain triggers a similar alarm mechanism. The difference lies only in how we interpret the situation. As American psychologist William James aptly noted at the end of the 19th century: "We do not cry because we are sad – we are sad because we cry." In other words, the body and mind are connected far more intimately than we usually realise.

Adrenaline, Cortisol, and the Chemistry of Excitement

Specific hormones also underlie the physical feeling of butterflies in the stomach. As soon as the brain triggers the alarm response, the adrenal glands begin secreting adrenaline – a hormone that transforms the entire body within seconds. The heart starts beating faster, muscles tense, pupils dilate, and – precisely – blood flow is redistributed. Adrenaline simultaneously acts directly on the smooth muscle of the intestines, which begins to function differently than in a resting state. The result is that characteristic sensation in the stomach area.

During prolonged stress or tension, cortisol – the so-called stress hormone – also enters the picture. It has a more complex effect on the digestive system – it can slow down or, conversely, accelerate intestinal motility, alter the permeability of the intestinal wall, and influence the composition of the gut microbiome. This is precisely why people under chronic stress so often suffer from digestive problems – abdominal pain, bloating, or irritable bowel syndrome. Butterflies in the stomach are, in this sense, merely the lightest and most pleasant variation of what stress can do to the gut.

Consider a real-life example: a young actress waits backstage for her first major performance on a professional stage. Her heart is pounding, her palms are sweating, and she feels that unmistakable flutter in her stomach. Her body is producing adrenaline at that moment, preparing her for performance – sharpening her attention, increasing reaction speed, and mobilising energy reserves. The butterflies in her stomach are, in this case, literally a physiological preparatory ritual before an important event. Once the performance begins and concentration shifts to the act itself, the feeling typically disappears – the adrenaline wave subsides and the body shifts into a different mode.

Also fascinating is the role of dopamine and serotonin in the entire process. Serotonin – a neurotransmitter associated with wellbeing and happiness – is produced approximately 95% in the gut, not in the brain. So when we experience a strong positive emotion, the intestines are literally flooded with neuroactive substances that influence their function. This biochemical cocktail is another reason why we feel emotions so strongly in a physical sense, in the abdominal area.

Why Butterflies – and What to Do With That Feeling

The butterfly metaphor is, incidentally, surprisingly apt. Butterflies are light, unpredictable, their movement is rapid and difficult to grasp – just like that feeling in the stomach. Different languages have created different images for the same experience: Germans speak of "Schmetterlinge im Bauch" (butterflies in the stomach), the English of "butterflies in the stomach," the Japanese of a feeling as if their stomach has turned over. All around the world, people intuitively reach for images of movement and lightness to describe this bodily response.

Understanding the mechanism behind this feeling also has a practical dimension. Instead of "I'm nervous," saying "I'm excited" – both situations share the same physiological basis, but they influence thinking and behaviour differently.

A study from Harvard University, led by Professor Alison Wood Brooks and published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology, demonstrated that people who told themselves "I'm excited" rather than "I'm nervous" before a demanding performance objectively achieved better results. The body remained in the same physiological state – with butterflies in the stomach and elevated adrenaline levels – but the mind worked with it differently.

There are, of course, also ways to naturally reduce the intensity of this feeling. Deep, slow breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system – the counterpart to the sympathetic system – and helps the body transition from a state of alertness to a state of calm. Specifically, a technique called "coherent breathing," in which we inhale for five seconds and exhale for another five, demonstrably reduces heart rate and calms the digestive system. Similarly effective is the conscious release of muscular tension in the abdominal area – many people in a nervous state involuntarily tighten their abdominal muscles, which only intensifies the unpleasant feeling.

Caring for the gut microbiome also plays a role – a healthy and diverse gut flora contributes to better regulation of emotional responses, precisely through the gut-brain axis. Foods rich in probiotics and prebiotics, such as fermented products, whole grains, or various types of vegetables, can contribute in the long term to the gut responding less turbulently to stress. This is one of the less expected arguments for healthy eating – we eat not only for the body, but in a certain sense for emotional balance as well.

Butterflies in the stomach are therefore far more than just a poetic metaphor for being in love or feeling nervous. They are living proof of how deeply our emotions and our body are connected, how ancient evolutionary mechanisms continue to shape our everyday experience, and how the gut – our second brain – perceives the world alongside us.
