And this is precisely what many people underestimate when thinking about what missing a workout does to us psychologically.

Exercise is still too often perceived merely as a tool for shaping the body. Calories burned are counted, waist measurements and scales are monitored. The psychological dimension of exercise remains in the shadows, even though for many people it may be the real reason they return to the gym or go jogging day after day. The moment movement disappears from their lives – whether due to illness, overwork, travel, or simply loss of motivation – the brain notices first.

The science behind why we miss exercise is surprisingly compelling. During physical activity, the body releases a whole cascade of neurochemical substances – endorphins, dopamine, serotonin, and noradrenaline. Together, these substances influence mood, concentration, sleep quality, and how we perceive stress. This is no mysticism – it's biochemistry described by hundreds of scientific studies. Research published in JAMA Psychiatry has repeatedly confirmed that regular exercise has a comparable effect on mild to moderate depression as pharmacological treatment.

When we suddenly stop exercising, levels of these substances drop. Not dramatically overnight, but gradually – and it's precisely this gradual nature that makes it insidious. A person doesn't realise they're changing until they start behaving differently. They become more irritable with colleagues, sleep worse, and are more easily overwhelmed by negative thoughts. Yet objectively, nothing in their life has changed – they've simply stopped running.

This phenomenon even has its unofficial name: "exercise withdrawal." Psychologists and sports scientists describe it in regularly exercising individuals who are suddenly forced to interrupt their routine. Symptoms include anxiety, irritability, loss of appetite or conversely overeating, disrupted sleep, and a sense of emptiness. Does this sound like an exaggeration? It isn't.

Take Martina, a thirty-year-old accountant from Brno, who attended group yoga classes three times a week for five years. When work overwhelmed her and she missed classes for two months, she initially noticed nothing. After three weeks, however, she began feeling that "everything was irritating her," she had more difficulty concentrating on numbers, and couldn't fall asleep in the evenings. Only when she returned to classes did she realise in retrospect how much she had missed the movement – not in her muscles, but in her head.

Anxiety, sleep, and self-image: a triangle that collapses

One of the most noticeable impacts of stopping exercise is a deterioration in sleep quality. Physical activity helps regulate the circadian rhythm and reduces cortisol levels – the stress hormone that, when in excess, prevents deep sleep. Without exercise, cortisol rises, the body remains in a state of alert wakefulness, and the brain refuses to switch off. Insomnia then further deepens anxiety, creating a vicious cycle that's difficult to escape without conscious intervention.

Anxiety itself is another significant symptom. Exercise functions as a natural outlet for accumulated tension – both physical and emotional. A person who has grown accustomed to relieving stress during an afternoon running route suddenly has nowhere to direct this tension. It accumulates, seeks other outlets, and often manifests as unfounded nervousness, hypersensitivity, or the feeling that "it's all too much."

The third point of this unstable triangle is self-image. Regular exercise builds not only physical fitness but also a sense of personal competence and discipline. People who exercise regularly think of themselves differently – they feel more capable, stronger, more resilient. When this habit falls away, self-image can begin to crumble. Feelings of guilt for "being lazy" set in, along with comparisons to one's former self, and sometimes shame. Paradoxically, these very negative feelings then prevent a return to movement, because the person feels "too far behind their former self."

As psychologist Kelly McGonigal aptly wrote in her book The Joy of Movement: "Movement isn't just about what we do with our bodies. It's a way of relating to ourselves."

This dimension is particularly pronounced in people for whom sport is part of their identity – runners, cyclists, regular gym-goers. For them, interrupting training isn't merely a logistical change in the diary. It's a loss of part of who they are.

It's worth noting that not everyone experiences the interruption of exercise with the same intensity. It depends on the length and regularity of the previous exercise habit, on personality, on current life circumstances, and on the reason for the interruption. A voluntary rest after a demanding race is experienced psychologically differently from an involuntary break due to injury or illness. In the latter case, the psychological consequences are compounded by frustration at helplessness and concerns about physical condition.

Injuries are a particularly challenging chapter in this regard. Athletes – even recreational ones – struggle with feelings of sadness during a prolonged forced break that the general public sometimes mistakenly dismisses. "It's just a knee" or "At least you'll get some rest" are phrases that are well-intentioned but miss the reality of what the person is experiencing. Sports psychology research shows that the psychological response to injury can resemble the stages of grief – from denial through anger to acceptance.

How to maintain psychological balance even without training

Understanding what happens to us psychologically when we stop moving is the first step toward being able to work with it. There are several ways to mitigate the psychological effects of missed training – and most of them don't require replacing full-scale sport.

Surprisingly effective is even brief movement in nature. A walk through a park or forest doesn't have the same physiological effect as an hour in the gym, but the combination of movement, fresh air, and nature has a demonstrably positive influence on mood and reduces stress hormone levels. The Japanese concept of "shinrin-yoku", or forest bathing, is well-documented in this regard. Even a twenty-minute walk among trees is not negligible.

Another important tool is conscious work with routine. If exercise falls away, it's useful to replace it with another structured activity that provides a similar sense of accomplishment and discipline – this might be meditation, morning stretching, a cold shower, or even cooking a healthy meal. It's not a full replacement, but it maintains the rhythm the brain needs. Routine itself has a calming effect, because it gives days a predictable structure.

Nutrition plays a greater role in this context than most people realise. When training is missed, metabolism and appetite change as well – some people lose their appetite, while others reach for carbohydrates as a quick source of dopamine. A conscious approach to eating, sufficient magnesium (which supports the nervous system and sleep quality), omega-3 fatty acids, and B vitamins can alleviate some of the psychological symptoms. A healthy lifestyle is not just about exercise – it's a system of interconnected habits where each part supports the others.

The social dimension of movement is another aspect that is lost when training is interrupted, and which people underestimate. Group classes, running groups, or regular squash matches with a friend aren't just about sport – they're about connection, shared experience, and a sense of belonging. When these gatherings fall away, this social anchor point is lost too. Consciously maintaining contact with people from the exercise community – even just via messages or a shared walk – can partially compensate for this loss.

It's also important not to succumb to the pressure of an immediate return "to full performance." One of the biggest mistakes people make after interrupting training is trying to make up for lost time too quickly. This leads to overexertion, disappointment with results, and in worse cases, injury. Both body and mind need time to readjust. A gradual return to movement is always better than a heroic restart.

Interestingly, even the act of planning a return to training can have a positive psychological effect. Research in behavioural psychology shows that a concrete plan – "on Tuesday I'll go for a thirty-minute walk, on Thursday I'll try some light stretching" – reduces anxiety and restores a sense of control over the situation. The brain responds favourably even to the anticipation of movement, not just to movement itself.

All of this ultimately points to something more fundamental: movement is not a luxury or merely an aesthetic project. It is a basic biological need of human beings, deeply intertwined with mental health, emotional experience, and how we see ourselves. Ignoring what the absence of movement does to us psychologically is like ignoring thirst just because we don't yet have a headache. The signals are there – we simply need to learn to perceive them, and to take them seriously.
