Ecoalf was founded in 2009 by Javier Goyeneche, who also serves as the brand's president. The name and concept were inspired by his sons Alfred and Álvaro. The brand launched its first collection and flagship store in Madrid in 2012, following three years of research and development.

The Ecoalf Foundation was established in 2015 to support the Upcycling the Oceans project. Working in collaboration with the fishing industry, it collects ocean waste and processes it into yarns and fabrics. The brand also transforms recovered plastic bottles into Ocean Yarn — 100% recycled polyester that is also used in footwear.

In 2018, Ecoalf became the first Spanish fashion company to receive B Corp certification.
