The Etat Libre d'Orange brand was founded in 2006 by Etienne de Swardt, who was born in South Africa. Its name references the historical Orange Free State in present-day South Africa and the ideals of freedom and independence.

It uses simple bottles and focuses primarily on the fragrance composition rather than elaborate packaging design.
