Ecoalf was founded in 2009 by Javier Goyeneche, who serves as the brand's president. The name is derived from the names of his sons Alfred and Álvaro. The founding vision was to create recycled products with quality and design comparable to those made from non-recycled materials. The first collection was developed after three years of research and development and was launched in 2012 alongside the first flagship store in Madrid.

In 2015, the Ecoalf Foundation was established to support the Upcycling the Oceans project. Working in collaboration with the fishing industry, it collects marine waste and processes it into yarn and textiles.
