The Vaseline brand was officially launched in 1870, when Robert Chesebrough began distributing purified petroleum jelly. This was preceded by the discovery of a waxy substance in Titusville, Pennsylvania in 1859, and the patenting of his own petroleum jelly purification method in 1865.

The product is manufactured by Unilever. The brand bases its product development on the scientific assessment of ingredient safety and efficacy through the Unilever Safety and Environmental Assurance Centre. Unilever has been using alternatives to animal testing, including computer modelling and cell-based methods, since the 1980s. In 2015, the brand launched the Vaseline Healing Project in partnership with Direct Relief, focused on access to skin care.
