Tricalcium Phosphate

Tricalcium Phosphate, widely known as Tricalcium Phosphate, Tricalcium Phosphate or TCP, is a white and odorless substance that has wide applications in the food, pharmaceutical and dental hygiene industries. It is a calcium phosphate salt that occurs naturally in many forms. Tricalcium phosphate is a product of industrial phosphate production.

Tricalcium phosphate is a versatile additive in a variety of food products and a stabilizer of some foods. It is used extensively as a bottling and anti-caking additive in powdered foods such as powdered milk, puddings, jellies, soup mixes, cheese or instant coffee. In the pharmaceutical industry it is used as a filler for tablets and as a base in the production of bioactive materials for dental implants and for medical filling materials. TCP is also used in animal feeds as a calcium and phosphorus supplement. Small amounts can also be found in toothpastes where it acts as an abrasive component.

However, although Tricalcium Phosphate is generally considered safe and serves as a source of calcium and phosphorus, it could cause health problems if dosed incorrectly. Too much can cause side effects such as constipation, dry mouth, loss of appetite, or in extreme cases, can lead to calcium deposits in the bodies. It is therefore important that the intake of Tricalcium Phosphate is monitored and kept within safe limits.
