Tomato cultivation is one of the most widespread vegetable growing activities worldwide, both in individual gardens and on a commercial level.

The edible tomato is used in a wide range of gastronomic products. Among the best known is the classic ketchup, which is made from tomato puree, sugar, vinegar and various spices. Another important product is tomato paste, which is the basis of many sauces and soups. Tomatoes are also often used in the production of various types of preserves, marinades and jams. It is also used in the diet in its fresh form, both in salads and in the preparation of sandwiches or as a side dish in many dishes. Some types of tomato are also suitable for drying and then using as sun-dried tomatoes in olive oil. Last but not least, we cannot forget tomato juice, which is a favourite drink of many people all over the world.
