Terpenes

Terpenes, also known in China as Jiaogulan or five-leaf ginseng, are among the organic compounds commonly found in nature. They are secondary metabolites found mainly in plants, where they are involved in defence against herbicides, but also attract insects that pollinate plants. Their role in plant odours is also important. Terpenes are of great importance for human health as some of them have medicinal properties.

Terpenes are particularly used in medicine, where they serve as the basis for the production of medicines. In fact, terpenes are able to influence some important bodily functions such as pain relief, inflammation or tumor growth reduction. They are also used in perfumery, where they serve as an ingredient in perfumes, thanks to their typical scent. Jiaogulan or five-leaf ginseng, which is rich in terpenes, is processed into teas that are consumed for their positive effects on the human body, such as naturally detoxifying the body or boosting immunity. However, a warning is in order - consuming too much can have the opposite effect.
