Tartar (Sanguisorba officinalis)

Other names: Bloodroot, Comfrey, Blood spice, Bloodroot, Great burnet

Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)

Tartar, also known as Bloodroot, Chimneyweed, Blood Spice, Bloodroot or Great burnet in English, is an herb native to the temperate zones of the Northern Hemisphere. It is characterized by its red-black flowers forming long panicles and long-stalked leaves. This species is known for its medicinal properties, which gave it its name - the Latin word "sanguis" means blood. This is because bloodroot contains substances that promote blood clotting and wound healing. In the past, therefore, bloodroot was used to treat various internal and external bleeding, to cure digestive problems and was considered an excellent remedy for diarrhoea.

Although nowadays bloodroot toten is used in traditional rather than conventional medicine, it still finds its use. It is popular as part of various herbal mixtures and teas that are designed to boost the immune system and aid digestion. It is also used in cosmetics, where it is part of skin preparations to help treat acne and eczema. Extracts of bloodroot are also included in some dietary supplements designed to promote blood clotting. Bloodroot toten is also a popular ornamental plant that is grown in gardens for its distinctive flowers.
