Tamanu (Calophyllum Inophyllum)

Tamanu, scientifically known as Calophyllum Inophyllum, bears other names such as Domba, Calaba obovate or Dilo Nut, referring to its polysemy and extraordinary usefulness. This plant is native to Asia, specifically to areas of southeast India and northern Australia. It is mainly used in the cosmetic industry, but also finds its application in medicine and food. It is also used as a shade tree in the landscape or as a decorative element in parks and botanical gardens. The tamanu reaches a height of 6 to 25 metres and has a distinctively shaped crown with branches growing in several directions.

Its advantages lie mainly in the oil that is extracted from the seeds of the plant. Tamanu oil is particularly popular in cosmetics due to its regenerative and healing properties. In fact, it contains substances that promote the formation of new cells and thus aid in wound healing. It also has anti-inflammatory properties and is suitable for sensitive skin. The oil is usually found in skin care products, especially in creams, balms, serums or soaps. The essential oil is also extracted from tamanu and used in aromatherapy for its calming effects.

Tamanu oil is also used medicinally to treat various skin problems such as acne, eczema, burns or ulcers. In the food industry, tamanu nuts are used for their high protein and fat content. Although tamanu wood is not strong and pest-resistant enough on its own, it can be used to make furniture or boats, especially in areas where it grows in large quantities.
