Small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata)

The small-leaved linden, also known as the heart lime, lime tree or linden, is a deciduous tree belonging to the saponiferous family. This tree earned its name because of its heart-shaped leaves, which end narrowly and have a rounded base. It is very popular in park and avenue plantings, but is also found in forests. The heart linden can grow up to 38 metres tall, has smooth grey bark and is known for its long growth, it can live up to 1000 years. Its fruit are spherical achenes covered with woody scales, which have a characteristic, fragrant aroma when peeled.

Our ancestors used the linden tree for many purposes. The wood of the linden tree was used for carving, joinery, musical instruments and toys. To this day, linden wood is still popular for making wooden sculptures and statues because it is easy to work and resistant to pests. The leaves and flowers of the small-leaved lime are widely used in medicine, where they serve as raw material for the production of teas and syrups. The flowers of the lime tree are known to promote sweating and thus the removal of pollutants from the body. The small-leaved lime therefore plays an important role in today's medicine and its popularity is growing. One of the other products of the lime tree is honey. Beekeepers often place their hives in areas where lime trees grow, as the nectar from the flowers of the lime tree has a very delicious taste and is a source of high-quality honey.
