Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)

Niaouli, scientifically known as Melaleuca quinquenervia b.s. viridiflorol, is a tree native to Australia that is also referred to as Sweet flag. It is a robust and hardy tree that can reach heights of up to 25 metres. It is characterized by its broad, papery, pinkish to brown leaves. The flowers are white and occur in clusters. They grow at the end of the rhizomes and its leaves are feathery with five veins, hence its generic name 'quinquenervia'.

Niaouli is a highly prized tree in the essential oil world for its distinctive scent and medicinal properties. The highly prized niaouli oil is extracted from the young branches and leaves by steam distillation. This oil is particularly used in aromatherapy, where it is widely used for its anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and analgesic properties. It is also a component of many cosmetic products such as soaps, creams or shampoos, where it helps in the treatment of eczema, acne or other skin infections.
