Mullein (Verbascum)

The mullein or candelabra, Peter's staff or mallow is a well-known plant, belonging to the perennial biennial herbs. It is a large, sturdy plant reaching 1-2 metres in height, which can be recognised mainly by its spikes of yellow flowers and leaves with a distinctive leathery appearance. It dominates the surrounding plants with its tall, candelabra-like flower stems, which is probably the origin of one of its names - candlestick. In warmer areas of Europe it can be found on the edges of fields, meadows or roadsides.

The mullein is especially valued for its medicinal properties. It is mainly used in homeopathy and folk medicine, where it has a wide range of applications. Its flowers are anti-inflammatory and soothe the respiratory tract, which is why they are used to treat colds, asthma, bronchitis and coughs. A tea is prepared from the dried flowers. However, the main role is played by the oil of mullein. This oil, extracted from mullein flowers, is mainly used in the cosmetics industry. It is found in various face and body creams and has regenerative and healing properties. The substances contained in mullein promote wound healing, reduce skin redness and counteract acne. It has also been known to be used to make candles, which is probably another reason why people call it candlestick. Modern research also shows that mullein may have the potential to fight certain types of cancer.
