Maple (Acer)

Other names: Sugar maple, Norway maple, Acer pseudoplatanus, Acer palmatum, Silver maple, Acer saccharinum, Maple

Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)

The maple tree, known by many names such as sugar maple, sycamore, Acer pseudoplatanus, Acer palmatum, silver maple, Acer saccharinum or Maple in English, is a tree of high decorative and economic importance. The genus Maple includes more than 200 species, which are found mainly in the northern hemisphere - in North America, Europe and Asia. They are deciduous and are popular for their beautiful autumn leaf colour.

Maple is a very useful tree and its wood is used in many industries. Maple wood is hard, tough and very durable, so it is often used in the manufacture of furniture, parquet floors, wooden toys, musical instruments including pianos and guitar bodies. Another use of maple wood is in construction, where it is used for flooring, paneling and doors. Sugar maple, as the name suggests, is the source of maple syrup, which is prized for its unique sweet taste. The palm-leaved maple, also known as the Japanese maple, is popular in horticulture for its attractive foliage and compact growth. The silver maple, in turn, is sought after for its rapid growth and ability to tolerate poor soils, making it a popular tree for planting in cities and parks.
