Ligustrum lucidum, sometimes referred to as Chinese bird's beak or Chinese wax tree, is a deciduous woody plant native to China, Japan and Korea. It is a robust tree growing to a height of 10 to 18 metres with glossy, dark green leaves, purple flowers and black berries. Its fruit is called Nu Zhen zi or Zhen zi in China, while in Korea it is known as Dong qing zin. This tree is valued for its high resistance to pests and diseases, so it is often found as an ornamental tree in gardens and parks.
The glossy bird's beak is especially valuable for its medicinal properties. Its berries are used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat various ailments, including liver and kidney problems, as well as to boost the immune system.
