Geraniol

Geraniol is an organic substance also known by the names gellan gum, gellan gum, or E418. It is a natural compound belonging to the monoterpene alcohols, which is characterized by its characteristic pink smell. Geraniol is found in many aromatic plants such as geranium, lemongrass, rose or lavender. It is because of its aroma that it is often used in the food and cosmetics industry.

In the food industry, geraniol is used as a flavouring in various types of food. These include drinks, confectionery and ice cream. Other applications include the tobacco industry, where it is used to flavour tobacco products. In addition, geraniol is also used extensively in perfumery and cosmetics for its slightly pink, floral scent. It can be found, for example, in soaps, creams, shampoos, but also in cleaning products and candles. However, it is important to point out that geraniol can cause allergic reactions and skin irritation in some people. Therefore, its presence is obligatorily declared on the packaging of cosmetic products.

Minor correction: gellan gum (E418) and geraniol are two different substances. While Geraniol is a flavouring substance, Gellan gum is a polysaccharide used in the food industry as a stabiliser, thickener and emulsifier. Notwithstanding this mistake, both substances are widely used in various industries and each has its own specific properties and uses. However, it is essential to ensure that they are safe for consumers and to comply with the necessary regulations regarding their use and labelling.
