Carnauba (Copernicia cerifera)

Other names: Carnauba wax, E903

Harm score: 2 (Derivatives of natural substances)

Carnauba, also known as carnauba wax or E903, is a product that is extracted from the leaves of the hedgehog palm Copernicia cerifera. This palm is native to northeastern Brazil, where it grows mainly in areas with low rainfall. Carnauba wax is obtained from the leaves of the palm by harvesting the leaves, drying them in the sun and then scraping or extracting the wax with solvents. This wax is highly valued for its durability and lustre and finds wide application in a number of industries.

Carnauba wax is mostly used in the food industry, as evidenced by its designation as food additive E903. It adds shine to foods, protects them from drying out and improves their consistency. In the confectionery industry, for example, it is used for the final coating on candies and chewing gum to improve their appearance. In cosmetics, carnauba is used in many products such as lipsticks, creams and make-up. But its use is not limited to food and cosmetics, it is also used in the automotive industry as a component of car waxes or in the chemical industry. Its ability to produce a glossy surface is also used in paints, for example on wood or leather.
