Bubblegum

Other names: Fucus vesiculosus, bubbleweed, bladderwort, kelp

Harm score: 1 (Natural substances)

Bubble kelp, also known as Fucus vesiculosus, bubble kelp, bladder kelp or kelp, is a species of brown seaweed native to the seas and oceans of the Northern Hemisphere. This species is one of the hardiest and most widely distributed marine plants in the world. Bubblegum usually grows in areas with high salinity (salt content of seawater) and cooler temperatures. Its distinctive feature is the small gas bladders that keep the seaweed afloat and allow it to photosynthesise.

In the world of gastronomy, cosmetics and medicine, it is becoming increasingly famous for its unique properties and the substances it contains. Seaweed is rich in iodine, vitamin A and C, calcium, magnesium and iron. In the pharmaceutical industry, extracts of seaweed are used to produce medicines for thyroid disorders, while in the cosmetics industry it is used to produce face masks, creams and shampoos. In gastronomy, kelp is regarded as a delicacy and is added to various dishes, and its popular consumption is particularly widespread in Asian cuisine. In addition, due to its high vitamin and mineral content, this algae is becoming a popular ingredient in various dietary supplements.
